17. Operating temperature

The operating temperature refers to the minimum and maximum temperature that the cable can safely operate for a certain period of time. This temperature depends on the insulation and

sheathing material (if any) of the cable. Each kind of material type has an upper and lower range of operating temperature. The temperature determined mainly by the material type. Sometimes

it also relates to that whether the cable is required to be flexible at this temperature or not. Generally, materials soften at higher temperature and become rigid at lower temperature. Therefore,

it leads to the material less suitable for normal application involving flexing at either low or high temperature. Take plain PVC as an example, its operation temperature is -15°C to 70°C. We also

have special PVC material having the lower operation temperature at -40°C or the upper temperature at 90°C.
